Caring for Alpaca Knitwear: A Simple Guide

Caring for Alpaca Knitwear: A Simple Guide

Caring for Alpaca Knitwear: A Simple Guide

Great quality shouldn't be reserved for our own closets. Our pups deserve the same thoughtful, well-made pieces we choose for ourselves — and that starts with the fiber.

At warmthe, our sweaters are knit from 100% baby alpaca, a natural fiber that's been prized for centuries for good reason. Unlike synthetic materials, alpaca is water repellent, hypoallergenic, and remarkably soft, even against the most sensitive skin. It's also naturally warm without added weight.

But like any high-quality wool garment, alpaca asks for a little extra care in return. Here's how to keep your dog's sweater looking and feeling its best for years to come.

Why Alpaca Is Worth the Extra Care

Alpaca fiber is prized in the world of fine knitwear for a reason. It holds a few key properties that set it apart from synthetic fabrics:

  • Water repellent — alpaca naturally resists moisture, helping keep your dog dry and comfortable
  • Hypoallergenic — free of the lanolin found in sheep's wool, making it gentler for sensitive skin
  • Exceptionally soft — the fibers are fine and smooth, without the itch often associated with other wools
  • Naturally warm — alpaca insulates efficiently, offering warmth without bulk

These same qualities that make alpaca so comfortable are also what make it a bit more delicate than everyday fabrics. Treating it well means it'll return the favor for seasons to come.

How to Wash Your Alpaca Sweater

Both our Cable Knit and Hooded Knit sweaters are made to be hand washed in cold water. A gentle approach is all it takes:

  1. Fill a basin with cold water and a small amount of mild, wool-safe detergent
  2. Submerge the sweater and gently swirl — avoid scrubbing, wringing, or twisting
  3. Rinse thoroughly with cold water until the soap is fully removed
  4. Gently press out excess water with a clean towel; never wring

Alternatively, dry cleaning is always a safe option if you'd prefer to leave the process to the professionals.

Drying: Lay Flat, Always

This is the step most people get wrong — and it matters. After washing, lay the sweater flat on a clean, dry towel, gently reshaping it to its original form. Avoid hanging it to dry, as the weight of the wet fibers can stretch the sweater out of shape over time. Keep it away from direct sunlight and heat, and let it air dry naturally.

What to Avoid

To keep your sweater looking its best:

  • Never machine wash or machine dry. Heat and agitation can shrink or felt the fibers, permanently altering the fit.
  • Avoid wringing or twisting. This can distort the shape and stress the knit.
  • Skip harsh detergents. Stick to something mild and specifically suited for wool.
  • Don't hang to dry. Always lay flat to preserve its shape.

A Little Care Goes a Long Way

Just like a high-quality sweater in your own closet, your dog's alpaca knit deserves the same thoughtfulness when it comes to cleaning. Taking a few extra minutes with each wash isn't just about avoiding damage — it's about honoring the craftsmanship behind the piece, and making sure it stays soft, warm, and well-loved for years to come.

With the right care, your dog's warmthe sweater will hold up wash after wash, season after season — because good quality is always worth taking care of.
